The English Premier League is home to plenty of American talent. From Tim Howard at Everton and Clint Dempsey at Fulham, to Brad Freidel and Brad Guzan at Aston Villa, lots of Americans have crossed the Atlantic. Jozy Altidore was born in Newark, but his skills on the field have taken him to Europe’s most prestigious leagues. He used to play in the Premiership for Hull City and is currently fighting for a starting spot at Villareal in Spain’s La Liga. We decided to go visit him in Philly—an hour from where he was born— to chat about his exposure as a US player and to find out about what keeps him grounded. So we did the obvious: hung out, took him to get some of Geno’s Famous Philly Cheese Steaks, and talked soccer with a 20 year old who is poised to be one of the most important American soccer players of our time.
