Just when it seemed that Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez was on course to join Manchester City, Pep Guardiola’s neighbours ripped up the script.
According to Sky Italy, Manchester United are now interested in signing the Chile international, whose contract at the Emirates expires in the summer.
The report claims that the Red Devils are willing to include outcast Henrikh Mkhitaryan in a player-plus-cash deal.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has done his best to play down the speculation, but it increasingly seems likely that Sanchez will leave either before the end of the month or when the campaign comes to a close.
Phil Neville, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford, thinks that the former Barcelona star would be a hit at United.
The retired footballer, who won 10 major trophies at the Red Devils, has claimed that Sanchez could make the same impact as club legend Eric Cantona.
The Frenchman spent five years playing for United in the ’90s, winning four Premier League titles in that time.
According to ESPN, while on Sky Sports’ Super 6 Class of ’92 Facebook Live, Neville said:
“I think it would be an absolutely unbelievable signing. If you look back at Man Utd’s big signings over the decades, Cantona came out of the hat, [Robin] Van Persie was a surprise, and they both helped United win titles. I think this could have a similar impact.
“He’s got the character to play at Old Trafford. It would be a coup, particularly for United fans, to have a player like Sanchez potentially come to them over City. It would be a strong statement.”
