Griezmann was named in the starting XI for Atletico on Saturday as Diego Simeone's side faced Espanyol in La Liga. The outing was Griezmann's 521st in the Spanish top flight, the most by any foreign player, beating the record previously held by Messi at Barcelona (520).

It may have been a record-breaking day for Griezmann but it ended in disappointment for Atletico. Simeone's side could only draw with Espanyol and will finish the weekend nine points off top spot if leaders Barcelona beat Girona on Sunday. Meanwhile, Griezmann's future at Atletico remains uncertain amid speculation about a potential move to MLS.
