As reported by The Daily Record, Celtic are interested in a former Motherwell winger in their efforts to build a squad capable of competing at European level.
What’s the story?
Oxford City isn’t generally the place you’d expect a team with European ambitions to be doing business but the Hoops are well known for casting their eye on all divisions in all countries.
Now they’re targeting League One winger Marvin Johnson, a man familiar to Scottish football fans.
That’s according to The Daily Record, who say that Celtic are interested in bringing him back to the Premiership to strengthen their squad this summer.
Is this a move that makes sense, or should the Hoops be trying to attract players from a higher level of football?
The right man for Celtic?
There’s no doubting Johnson is a capable winger on his day, with an eye for goal too. He was a fan favourite at Motherwell before his move to England at the start of the season, scoring 11 goals in 64 appearances for the Steelmen.
Deployed primarily on the left though, he would be in direct competition with Scott Sinclair, a man who has been in sensational form this season. We know Brendan Rodgers likes to keep his squads lean and mean, so bringing in a player that likely couldn’t compete for first team places doesn’t make much sense.
Celtic are hoping to make progress in the UEFA Champions League next season and all resources must be channeled into signing players of real quality that can make a difference to the first team.
